MOVING FORWARD

The section above cuts through the Essoldo, the Link and the Restaurant. Looking back at the aims of the scheme, assessing how successfully these spaces work together will determine where improvements need to be made.

AIM
  • Give Stretford's community a new green space and social facility.

  • Reduce the impact of Chester Road on the area.

STRATEGY
  • Revive the Essoldo cinema, with an 'all day/night' social hub.

  • Create a counter-mass that provides presence along Chester Road in a coherent scheme.

3.1 DESIGN EVALUATION

separately designed elements joined together

Each element of the 3.1 proposal was designed with separate approaches, before being tied together. Whilst each element has a been thought through individually, there was little thought to how the elements connected. The result is that the plan is not conducive to the overall strategy and aims. This is reflected in the plan which is disjointed. The geometries are unrelated, not portraying that the uses of B-EAT are.

The unconnected masses fail to restore balance with Chester Road, whereas unifying the scheme has the presence to counter it. Creating a visual logic will show how the functions of each element are connected. The garden was particularly unsuccessful in this regard. It's size and curvature did not fit with the rest of the proposal.

PLAN:
  1. Develop the scheme as a whole to unify it.

  2. Revisit how old and new structure can work together.

  3. Once the overall scheme is coherent, zoom in to address the details of spaces.
